El-Rufai’s Alliance Call is a Desperate Bid for Political Relevance

The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has released a forceful statement opposing former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s recent call for a political alliance between Nigeria’s Northern and South-South regions in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

In their official response, the NDYC dismissed El-Rufai’s proposal as disingenuous, describing it as “a calculated effort to shield himself from accountability” rather than a genuine initiative for national unity. The organization pointed to El-Rufai’s past criticism of former President Goodluck Jonathan as contradicting his current position.

The statement highlighted allegations regarding El-Rufai’s governance record, referencing “monumental financial improprieties” currently under investigation by the Kaduna State House of Assembly. The NDYC characterized the former governor as a “political opportunist” whose loyalty shifts according to personal interests.

NDYC President Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, who signed the statement, called on South-South residents to reject what they termed as “desperate antics of a man running from his past.” The organization emphatically declared that their region “is not a dumping ground for failed politicians seeking rehabilitation” and urged Nigerians to remain wary of political figures attempting to “manipulate their way back into power under the pretense of national interest.”
